"Le Sillon"

Fernand Toussaint
15 3/4'' x 16''

Original chromo-lithograph from Les Maîtres de l'Affiche, Plate 80.

Le Sillon was a group of avant-garde Belgian artists, one of many thriving during the 1890s. They viewed themselves as independent artists working to find their own path outside the stiff confines of the era’s academic and historicist painting. The group’s magazine Le Sillon is the subject of this image, and was Fernand Toussaint’s first poster.

Le Sillon’ means ‘The Furrow’ and was a figure of speech for making one’s own way in the world. This spirit of harvest and renewal is given form as an ethereal woman, and Toussaint’s subtle use of color and line sings in this piece. The woman hugs tall stalks of flowing grain in one arm, and holds a scythe in the other, about to lovingly harvest the fruits of her labor. It’s a beautiful allegory, and the artist enhances it by letting the delicate colors and thin, sweeping lines speak for themselves.
