Aman-Jean was a French artist who became closely identified with the Symbolist movement. He began his formal studies in 1880 at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he became a friend of Georges Seurat, with whom he shared a studio for a number of years. He was also an assistant and student of the painter, Puvis de Chavannes. Aman-Jean specialized in portraying lovely young women in an ethereal dream-like setting.
