ARTISTS / Toussaint, Fernand

Belgian 1873-1956
Fernand Toussaint was born in Brussels in 1873. At fifteen he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels where he studied under Jean Portaels, an innovative and demanding teacher who attached prime importance to the art of drawing. Here Toussaint received thorough formal academic training before leaving for Paris in 1891 where he completed his studies. In Paris he met Alfred Stevens, who was then at the height of his artistic popularity, and with Stevens’ guidance, Toussaint formulated his own individual style, combining elegance and fine draughtsmanship with a free impressionistic handling of paint. He exhibited widely at most of the major venues in Brussels, and at the Salon des Artistes Francais in Paris, where he received a medal in 1901 and a gold medal in 1929. His medal winning exhibit that year was featured in the influential periodical: " L’Illustration". He is well known for creating a few fine poster images during his career. He also exhibited in many of the salons in Paris. Notably, Toussaint was involved with the Belgian circle of artists who formed "Le Sillon" (translates as "The Furrow") in the mid 1890s. He executed one of his most famous posters for this group. This Belgian "Le Sillon" is not to be confused with the philosophical newspaper founded by Mark Sangnier in Paris (1894), of a movement for a democratic and social Christianity which was later banned by Pope Pius X.
